He was born on August 8, 1866, in Maryland. His parents were free Black Americans who worked as sharecroppers. Because of racial violence in the South, his family moved to Georgetown. Matthew grew up in what became Washington, D.C. He attended a Black public school for many years. When he was ten, he heard a famous speech by Frederick Douglass. This speech inspired him to seek out education and new opportunities.

As a young man, Henson began a life of hard work and travel. At age twelve, he became a cabin boy on a merchant ship. This ship traveled to many places like China, Japan, and Africa. While at sea, a captain named Childs taught him to read and write. Later, Henson worked at a clothing store in Washington, D.C. In November 1887, he met a man named Robert Peary. Peary was an explorer who hired Henson to help with a trip to Nicaragua. Henson proved to be a very skilled worker during this time.

For the next twenty years, Henson and Peary explored the freezing Arctic.

Henson was much more than just an assistant to the team. He learned the Inuit language and was called Mahri-Pahluk by the local people. He became an expert at driving dog sleds and training dog teams. Henson also learned how to build igloos out of snow for shelter. He was a gifted craftsman who solved many problems in the cold. These skills helped the group survive many difficult journeys.

In the winter of 1908, the team began a huge mission. They wanted to reach the geographic North Pole.

On April 6, 1909, the group reached the spot they believed was the Pole. Henson said he was the first person in his party to actually arrive there. He even planted the American flag in the ice. While many people believed their claim, some researchers later had doubts about the exact location. Regardless, Henson's role in this famous journey was very important.

After his travels, Henson lived a long and meaningful life.

He wrote a book about his adventures in 1912. For many years, people did not give him enough credit for his work. However, he eventually received many great honors. He became a member of the Explorers Club in New York. He also met Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower. In 1988, he and his wife Lucy were moved to Arlington National Cemetery.
