Robert Edwin Peary was a famous American explorer and Navy officer.

He was born on May 6, 1856, in Pennsylvania. Later, he moved to Maine where he grew up. Peary was a very determined man with a big dream. He wanted to be the first person to reach the North Pole. This goal drove him to lead many trips to the freezing Arctic. He spent much of his life studying the ice and the cold.

To survive the Arctic, Peary used a special way of traveling. He called this the "Peary system." He used teams of dogs to pull sleds across the ice. He also set up supply caches, which are piles of food and tools left in spots along the way. Peary learned these great skills by studying the Inuit people. He wore warm furs like they did to keep his body heat in. He even built igloos for shelter instead of using heavy tents.

Peary's journey to the Arctic began after he studied engineering in college.

In 1881, he joined the United States Navy as a civil engineer. He worked on surveys for a canal in Nicaragua before heading north. During his first trip to Greenland in 1886, he tried to cross the ice by dogsled. It did not work out, but he learned a lot. He met Matthew Henson during a trip to Nicaragua. Henson became his most important assistant on every Arctic trip.

Many important things happened during his many expeditions. In 1891, Peary proved that Greenland is actually an island. He reached a place called Independence Fjord to find this out.

During another trip, he reached the Cape Morris Jesup at the top of Greenland. In 1909, Peary claimed he finally reached the North Pole. This was a huge claim that people talked about for a long time. He was even promoted to rear admiral in the Navy.

Even though Peary was famous, not everyone agreed with his stories. Some people, like Frederick Cook, also claimed to reach the Pole. Later, an explorer named Wally Herbert said Peary might not have reached the exact spot. However, Peary's work helped map many parts of the world that were unknown. He was a leader in the Explorers Club for two terms. His life was full of cold winds, hard work, and big discoveries.
