geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Arctic Archipelago is a huge group of islands in the far north. It sits at the northern end of North America. These islands are part of Canada. Most of them are in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. The group is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean. To the east, you will find Greenland and Baffin Bay. To the south, the land meets the Canadian mainland and Hudson Bay.

This place is made of many different pieces of land. There are 36,563 islands in total. Most of these islands are quite small. Only 94 of them are called major islands. Baffin Island is the largest island in the whole group. The islands are separated by many waterways. People call this group of paths the Northwest Passage.

People have lived here for a very long time. The first humans were called Paleo-Eskimos. They arrived from the mainland around 2500 BCE. Later, between 1000 and 1500 CE, the Thule people arrived. The Thule people are the ancestors of the Inuit living there today. In the 1570s, Martin Frobisher explored these areas. Later, Britain gave the islands to Canada in 1880.

Life in the archipelago is very quiet and spread out. Most of the islands have no people living on them at all. Only 11 islands have human settlements. These settlements are mostly Inuit towns near the coast. Baffin Island has the largest population with 13,039 people. One such place is the community of Iqaluit.

The land is very cold and mostly consists of tundra. This means there are few trees, but there are some mountains. The weather is Arctic, which means it stays very cold. Today, the Arctic sea ice is getting thinner. This is happening because of climate change. Scientists say this melting ice might help sea levels rise by the year 2100.
