To the east lies Greenland and Baffin Bay. To the south is the Canadian mainland and Hudson Bay.

There are 36,563 islands in this group. Most of them are very small. Only 94 are major islands. Baffin Island is the largest one. It is also where most people live. Most islands have no people at all. Only 11 islands have people living on them. These people are mostly Inuit. They live in small towns near the coast. One such place is Iqaluit.

The land is very cold. Most of it is tundra. Tundra is a type of land with very little trees. Some parts have high mountains. The islands are split by water. This water is called the Northwest Passage. Today, the sea ice is thinning. This happens because of climate change. Melting ice can make sea levels rise.
