Most people in Nunavut are Inuit. They have a way to rule themselves. This began on April 1, 1999. The capital city is Iqaluit. It sits on Baffin Island. It is the smallest capital in Canada by how many people live there.

The land is very big and very empty. It has very few people. In 2021, about 36,858 people lived there. Most people speak Inuktut. This is the name for Inuit languages like Inuktitut. They also speak English and French.

The weather is very cold. Most of the land has a polar climate. This means it stays cold for much of the year. The place called Alert is the northernmost place where people live.
