It sits in Canada. The island is part of two areas. One area is Nunavut. The other is the Northwest Territories. It is the eighth-largest island in the world. It is also Canada's second-largest island.

The weather is very cold. This is a polar climate. Winters are dark and long. Summers are cool and rainy. In some places, the sun stays below the horizon for weeks. This is called the polar night. In the summer, the sun stays up all night. This is called the midnight sun.

Many animals live here. Caribou herds move across the sea ice to find food. They move between the island and the mainland. Many types of lichen also grow on the rocks. Lichen is a type of plant that caribou eat in winter.
