Many caribou live on the island. In the autumn, they walk south over the sea ice. Only one small group of people lives here. They live in a town called Gjoa Haven.

Many explorers visited the island. They were looking for the Northwest Passage. Sir John Franklin led a trip here. His two ships became stuck in the ice. One ship was named HMS Erebus. The other was named HMS Terror. People found the Erebus in 2014. They found the Terror in 2016.

Roald Amundsen also stayed on the island. He spent two winters there. He lived in a natural harbour. He learned how to live in the Arctic from the local Inuit people.
