It sits in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut. The island is at the entrance to Hudson Bay. It is the 34th largest island in the world. It is also the ninth largest island in Canada.

The island is a cold place. It has a subarctic climate. This means it is very chilly. No trees grow here because it is above the tree line. In the winter, it stays below freezing for many months.

Many birds visit the island in the summer. Two bird sanctuaries protect them. These areas are great for the lesser snow goose. Over 500,000 snow geese nest at the Boas River site. This is more than 10% of all snow geese in the world. Bowhead whales also come to the water nearby.

Only one town lives on the island. It is called Coral Harbour. In the local Inuktitut language, it is called Salliq. About 1,035 people lived there in 2021. The island has many interesting rocks and minerals. Scientists still want to learn more about the land.
