It is the eighth-largest island in the whole world. It is also the second-largest island in Canada. The island sits across a border between two regions. Part of it is in Nunavut. The rest is in the Northwest Territories. Some people say its shape looks like a maple leaf. This is the famous symbol of Canada.

The island has a very cold polar climate. No month has an average temperature above freezing. Winters are long, dark, and very cold. October is often the snowiest month of the year. Summers are cool and rainy with pleasant days. At Cambridge Bay, the sun stays below the horizon from late November to mid-January. This time of darkness is called the polar night. In the summer, the sun stays up all night. This is known as the midnight sun.

Many people have explored this land over many years. The Thule culture lived here a long time ago. Archaeologists found old sleds on the Wollaston Peninsula. European explorers began seeing the coasts in the 1800s. John Richardson saw the southwest coast in 1826. Peter Warren Dease and Thomas Simpson saw the southeast coast in 1839. Later, John Rae charted the entire south coast in 1851. In 2008, two men finally walked across the whole island.

The island is full of interesting land and water. It has many peninsulas and deep inlets. The Storkerson Peninsula and the Prince Albert Peninsula are two examples. The highest point is in the Shaler Mountains. There is also a very large lake called Tahiryuaq.

You can even find large pieces of native copper in the Saneraum Hills. Only 2,168 people live on the island today. Most live in Cambridge Bay, while others live in Ulukhaktok.

Nature is very busy on Victoria Island. Many living things depend on the plants here. A large herd of caribou lives on the island. These caribou are special because they cross sea ice to find food. They move between the island and the mainland. Many types of lichen also grow on the rocks and soil. There are 237 different types of lichen in some areas. Caribou and muskoxen eat this lichen to stay alive during the winter.
