It sits in the Northwest Territories as part of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. To the west, the island meets the Beaufort Sea. The Amundsen Gulf lies to the south, separating it from the mainland. To the east, the Prince of Wales Strait sits between it and Victoria Island.

The island is the fifth largest in Canada. It is also the 24th largest island in the whole world.

The land is part of the tundra. This means there are no trees on the island. The tallest plant is the Arctic willow. It usually only grows as high as a person's knee. The island has very cold winters and short, cool summers. The highest point is called Durham Heights in the south. It rises to about 300 meters. The Thomsen River flows through the north. It is one of the northernmost rivers in North America that people can paddle in a canoe.

Many animals call this island home. You can find polar bears and barren-ground caribou here. There are also Peary caribou, which are endangered. The island has a very large group of muskoxen. In the past, over 68,000 muskoxen lived here. This was most of the world's muskoxen. Now, their numbers have dropped because of a bacterium.

Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds visit every summer. They nest in two special bird sanctuaries. The common raven and ptarmigan stay on the island all year.

People have been near Banks Island for a very long time. Archaeologists found sites from the Pre-Dorset culture. These sites date back to about 1500 BCE. In 1820, Sir William Edward Parry saw the island from nearby. He named it "Banks Land" for Sir Joseph Banks. Later, explorers called it "Baring Island." One ship, the HMS Investigator, became frozen in the ice.

In 2010, people found the ship using sonar in Mercy Bay.

Today, only one permanent town lives on the island. It is called Sachs Harbour, or Ikahuak. It sits on the southwest coast. In the 2021 census, only 104 people lived there. The people in the community know a lot about the land. They understand the weather, the ice, and the water. Many residents spend their time fishing or hunting. They even have an annual goose hunt in the spring.
