In the months of August and September, the ice often breaks near the shore. This creates a strip of open water.

Because of climate change, this ice-free area has been getting much larger lately. Scientists have even found something called "rotten ice." This new ice is thinner and weaker than the old ice.

This is a wedge-shaped piece of water between Alaska and the Yukon. Canada says the border should follow a straight line called a meridian. The United States says the border should be a line of equidistance. This means the line would be the same distance from both coasts. Both nations agree the boundary should be fair. They are working together to protect the environment while they talk.
