The Laptev Sea is a part of the Arctic Ocean.

It sits between the northern coast of Siberia and several island groups. These islands include the Taimyr Peninsula, Severnaya Zemlya, and the New Siberian Islands. To the west lies the Kara Sea, and to the east is the East Siberian Sea. This sea is a very important source of Arctic sea ice. On average, it sends out 483,000 square kilometers of ice every year. This is more ice than the Kara, East Siberian, and Chukchi seas combined.

The climate here is very harsh and cold. Temperatures stay below 0 °C for most of the year. In the north, it stays below freezing for 11 months. In the south, it stays below freezing for nine months. The sea is frozen most of the time. However, the ice usually begins to melt in late May or early June. During August and September, the water may look clear and blue.

Strong winter winds and snow storms are common. In the summer, the sun can warm the water in some bays to 10 °C.

People have lived near these shores for thousands of years. Indigenous tribes like the Yukaghirs lived here first. Later, the Evens and Evenks lived in the area. They spent their time fishing, hunting, and raising reindeer.

Later, Yakuts and Russians settled the region. Russian explorers began visiting the area in the 17th century. They often traveled from the south using large rivers. These rivers carry much fresh water into the salty sea.

Many large rivers flow into the Laptev Sea. The Lena River is the biggest one. It is the second largest river in the Russian Arctic. Other important rivers include the Khatanga, Anabar, Olenyok, Omoloy, and Yana.

These rivers bring so much fresh water that the sea becomes less salty in summer. The sea is also quite shallow. Most of it is less than 50 meters deep. There are dozens of islands scattered throughout the water. Some islands, like Bolshoy Begichev, are quite large.

The sea is a place of constant change. Storms and currents can erode the islands. In fact, some islands discovered in 1815 have already disappeared. The sea also holds secrets from the past. When the ice melts, it can reveal the remains of mammoths.

These are bones from ancient animals that lived long ago. The water moves in a large circle called a cyclone. This movement helps carry the ice and river water around the sea. It is a busy and moving part of our frozen world.
