The Kolyma is a major river in northeastern Siberia.

It flows through parts of the Sakha Republic, Magadan Oblast, and the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in Russia. This river is a very cold place for much of the year. It stays frozen to depths of several metres for about 250 days each year. The ice only goes away in early June. It stays free of ice until October. This long freeze defines much of life in the region.

The river begins at the meeting point of the Kulu and the Ayan-Yuryakh rivers. This happens in the Okhotsk-Kolyma Upland. At first, the river flows south through the Upper Kolyma Highlands. Later, it leaves the mountains and flows north. It moves across the Kolyma Lowland, which is a huge plain. This plain is part of the East Siberian Lowland and has thousands of lakes. Finally, the river empties into the Kolyma Gulf in the East Siberian Sea.

People have explored this area for a long time. In 1641, Mikhail Stadukhin and Semyon Dezhnyov traveled through the area. Stadukhin reached the Kolyma in the summer of 1644. Later, Baron Eduard Von Toll led a scientific group there. Between 1892 and 1894, his team did geological surveys. They traveled over 10,000 kilometres, including many trips up rivers. The river is also known for its history of gold mining and labor camps.

Many islands sit where the river meets the sea. Mikhalkino is the largest island in this area. It is located west of a branch called the Kamennaya Kolyma anabranch. Other islands include Sukharnyy, which is 3 kilometres from Mikhalkino. There is also the 5-kilometre-long Piat' Pal'tsev island. Near the western branch, you can find Nazarovsky Island.

Another island, Shtormovoy, is the northernmost one at the mouth of the river.

Life on the Kolyma involves working with the frozen land. The Kolyma Hydroelectric Station at Sinegorye is a huge earthen dam. It is about 150 feet high and provides electricity to the region. This dam is special because it uses frozen earth to stay strong. In some fishing towns, people use caves in the permafrost to store fish. Scientists even found 30,000-year-old plants growing from seeds found in this frozen ground.
