The Kolyma is a major river located in northeastern Siberia, Russia.

Its vast drainage basin covers parts of the Sakha Republic, the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and the Magadan Oblast. This river is defined by extreme cold and a massive landscape. It remains frozen to depths of several metres for approximately 250 days every year. The ice typically disappears in early June and stays away until October. This seasonal cycle shapes the entire environment of the Kolyma basin.

The river begins at the confluence of the Kulu and the Ayan-Yuryakh rivers. This meeting point occurs within the Okhotsk-Kolyma Upland. This upland sits in a watershed that separates the Kolyma basin from rivers flowing into the Sea of Okhotsk. In its upper course, the river flows roughly southwards through the Upper Kolyma Highlands. After leaving these mountains, it turns northwards. It then travels across the Kolyma Lowland, which is a vast plain within the East Siberian Lowland. This plain is characterized by thousands of lakes. Finally, the river empties into the Kolyma Gulf of the East Siberian Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean.

Many tributaries feed into the Kolyma as it flows toward the sea. These include the Ayan-Yuryakh and the Kulu near the source. Other significant rivers that join the Kolyma include the Seymchan, the Balygychan, and the Omolon. The river also receives water from the Bolshoy Anyuy and Maly Anyuy. As the river nears its mouth, it divides into two large branches. One branch is known as the Kamennaya Kolyma anabranch. The other is called the Prot. Pokhodskaya Kolyma.

At the mouth of the river, numerous islands are scattered across the delta. Mikhalkino is the largest island in this region. It sits to the west of the Kamennaya Kolyma anabranch. This island is long and wide, and it even breaks into smaller islands at its northern end. Another island, Sukharnyy, lies 3 kilometres from the northeastern shores of Mikhalkino. Nearby, the Morskiye Sotki Islands form a small cluster. Other notable islands include Piat' Pal'tsev, which is 5 kilometres long. Nazarovsky Island sits on the western side of the Prot. Pokhodskaya Kolyma. The northernmost island in this area is Shtormovoy Island.

History shows that the Kolyma has been a site of exploration and industry for centuries. In 1644, Mikhail Stadukhin reached the river and built a zimovye, or winter quarters. Between 1892 and 1894, Baron Eduard Von Toll led a geological survey expedition. His team covered over 10,000 kilometres to study the basin. The river is also famously associated with gold mining and the Soviet Gulag labour camps. This history was documented in Varlam Shalamov's book, The Kolyma Tales. Today, many people in the region survive through fishing and hunting.

Human engineering has also made a significant mark on the river. The Kolyma Hydroelectric Station at Sinegorye is a massive earthen dam. It stands about 150 feet high and provides most of the electricity for the region, including Magadan. This dam is unique because it uses air circulation tubes. These tubes carry frigid winter air into the dam's core. This process keeps the earth inside frozen, which stabilizes the structure. Kolyma Ges. stated this was the largest dam ever built in a permafrost region.

The permafrost around the Kolyma provides unique scientific and practical opportunities. In small fishing settlements, residents sometimes store fish in caves carved directly into the permafrost. This frozen ground also preserves ancient biological material. In 2012, scientists reported growing plants from 30,000-year-old Silene stenophylla fruit. These seeds had been stored in squirrel burrows near the river banks. This discovery highlights how the river's frozen environment acts as a natural time capsule.
