Indigirka

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Indigirka is a significant river located within the Sakha Republic in Russia. It flows through the vast East Siberian Lowland. The river is positioned between the Yana River to the west and the Kolyma River to the east. This river serves as a major geographic feature of the region. Its massive drainage basin covers a large area of the Siberian landscape. The river is essential to the local geography and the ecosystems it supports.

The river begins at a confluence of two long rivers. These are the Tuora-Yuryakh and the Taryn-Yuryakh. Both of these rivers start on the slopes of the Khalkan Range. From its source, the Indigirka flows northwest through the Yana-Oymyakon Highlands. It passes through the lowest parts of the Oymyakon Plateau. The water then turns north and cuts through various subranges of the Chersky Range. At the Chemalgin Range, the river narrows into a deep gorge. This narrow passage creates rapids in the water.

As the river continues, it undergoes several distinct stages. After joining the Moma River from the southeast, it enters the Momo-Selennyakh Depression. This area is a wide intermontane basin, which is a low area between mountains. Here, the middle course of the river begins. At this stage, the river valley expands significantly. The Indigirka then cuts across the Moma Range and flows northeast. It meanders across the Aby Lowland and grows even wider. Finally, it flows north through the Yana-Indigirka Lowland toward the sea.

Exploration of the Indigirka has a long history involving many different people. In 1638, the explorer Ivan Rebrov reached the river. Between 1636 and 1642, Elisei Buza pioneered an overland route to the river system. During this same period, Poznik Ivanov crossed the Verkhoyansk and Chersky Ranges to reach it. In 1642, Mikhail Stadukhin also reached the river by traveling overland from the Lena. Zashiversk was an important colonial outpost during early Russian colonization. However, the outpost was eventually abandoned in the 19th century. Later, from 1892 to 1894, Baron Eduard Von Toll conducted geological surveys. He worked for the Russian Academy of Sciences to study the basin.

The river environment is defined by extreme seasonal changes. The Indigirka freezes in October. It remains covered by ice until May or June. Despite the cold, the river is full of life. It teems with many different species of fish. Some of the most valuable are whitefish species. These include vendace, chir, muksun, inconnu, and omul. The river is also important for the economy. There is a gold prospecting industry in the basin. Ust-Nera is the largest settlement and serves as a major gold-mining center. Other main ports include Khonuu, Druzhina, Chokurdakh, and Tabor.

The end of the river is marked by a large, complex delta. A delta is a landform where a river splits into many branches. The Indigirka splits into two major northeast-flowing streams. The westernmost arm is the Russko-Ustyinskaya Protoka. The right arm is the Srednyaya Protoka, which means "Middle Arm." A third arm, the Kolymskaya Protoka, splits off from the middle arm. This eastern arm is located closest to the Kolyma River. The delta contains many flat islands. These include Usun-Ary, Uparovskiy Island, and Ploskiy Island. Other islands include Bolshoy Fedorovskiy and Krestovyy Island.

The Indigirka connects many different geographic systems. It links the high mountain ranges to the East Siberian Sea. The river's waters eventually flow into the Kolyma Bay. This bay is part of the larger East Siberian Sea. The river system moves water from the Khalkan Range through various lowlands and depressions. It acts as a massive drainage system for the Sakha Republic. By flowing through these diverse terrains, the Indigirka shapes the land it touches.
