It occupies a strategic position in the southwestern part of Eastern Siberia. The region shares borders with several other Russian territories. To the north and east, it meets Krasnoyarsk Krai. The Tuva Republic lies to the south and southeast. The Altai Republic sits to the south and southwest. Finally, Kemerovo Oblast borders the region to the west and northwest. The capital of this republic is the city of Abakan.\n\nThe physical geography of Khakassia is defined by extreme variety. Mountains cover approximately two-thirds of the total territory. These ranges include the eastern slopes of the Kuznetsk Alatau and the Abakan Range. These mountains also function as the natural boundaries for the republic. The highest elevation in the region is Kyzlasov Peak.

The remaining land is mostly flat. The most prominent flat feature is the Minusinsk Hollow. This area provides a contrast to the rugged mountain landscapes.\n\nWater is a vital component of the Khakassian landscape. The Yenisei is the largest river flowing through the republic. Other significant rivers include the Abakan, Tom\', Bely Iyus, and Black Iyus. The Chulym river flows between the Yenisei and the eastern mountains. Most of these rivers belong to the Ob river basin.

There are also more than three hundred lakes across the region. These bodies of water include both salt-water and fresh-water types. Lake Belyo is the largest lake found in Khakassia.\n\nThe history of the region is deeply connected to ancient states. From the 6th century AD, this territory was the core of the Yenisei Kirghiz state. In the 13th century, the Mongols defeated these people. This led many Kyrgyz people to migrate toward Central Asia. Modern Khakas people believe they are the descendants of those who stayed in Siberia. Later, the region was incorporated into the Russian state under Peter the Great. This change was confirmed by the Kyakhta Treaty in 1729. \n\nPolitical changes continued through the Soviet era and into modern Russia. In 1930, the Khakas Autonomous Oblast was established. This administrative unit had the same borders as the modern republic. During the 1920s and 1930s, Soviet authorities resettled about 250,000 Russians here. Later, 10,000 Volga Germans were deported to the region during World War II. In July 1991, the area became an Autonomous Soviet socialist republic. By February 1992, it officially became the Republic of Khakassia. Today, the republic is governed by a Constitution adopted in 1995.\n\nThe population of Khakassia is approximately 537,000 people. Most residents live in urban areas. The ethnic makeup of the region has changed significantly over time. According to the 2021 Census, ethnic Russians make up 82.1% of the population. The ethnic Khakas people represent 12.7% of the inhabitants.

Other groups include Germans, Tuvans, and Ukrainians. Religion is also diverse among the people. About 31.6% follow the Russian Orthodox Church. Many others identify as \"spiritual but not religious\" or as atheists.\n\nKhakassia possesses an economy driven by its abundant natural resources. The main industries include coal mining, ore mining, and timber production. The region is rich in iron, gold, silver, oil, and natural gas. Notably, Khakassia contains the largest molybdenum deposits in Russia. The transport network supports these industries through roads and railways. The federal highway R-257 runs through the republic. Additionally, 663 km of railway lines provide vital connections. The railway system links the Trans-Siberian Railway to the South-Siberian railway.\n\nNature and culture provide a unique identity for the republic. Forests cover much of the south and the west. These woods are home to wildlife like brown bears, wolves, and sable. The Khakassky Nature Reserve protects much of this environment.
