Altai Nature Reserve

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Altai Nature Reserve is a strict nature sanctuary located in Russia. It sits within the Altai Mountains of south Siberia. This area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Golden Mountains of Altai. This designation recognizes the region for its high biodiversity and its isolation from human activity. The reserve is also included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It covers 9.4% of the entire Altai Republic. Because it is a strict nature reserve, it remains one of the few pristine areas in its ecoregion.

The topography of the reserve is quite varied and elongated. It stretches from the northeast to the southwest. The land follows the Teletskoye basin and extends into the high interior mountains. Elevations in this region rise to 3,000 meters. The Chulyshman River flows into Lake Teletskoye. This river valley forms part of the western border of the reserve. Much of the territory consists of the plains and alpine ridges of the Chulyshman Highlands. Over 20% of the land is composed of rock, scree, and gravel. On the high plateaus, there are more than 1,000 alpine lakes that are larger than 0.1 square kilometers.

The reserve is located within the Sayan montane conifer forests ecoregion. This ecoregion features mountains divided by river valleys and high levels of precipitation. The climate is classified as a subarctic, humid continental climate. This means the summers are mild and the winters are cold and snowy. Only one to three months of the year have temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius. In January, the coldest month, temperatures can drop to -30 degrees Celsius. The warmest month is July, which averages 15 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall in the area is 600 millimeters.

Forests in the reserve are organized into three distinct subzones based on altitude. These are the light needle-leaf sparse taiga, the dark needle-leaf taiga, and the dark taiga. The most common coniferous trees include the Siberian larch, Siberian cedar, and Siberian fir. Near the slopes of Lake Teletskoye, you can find secondary forests of birch and alder. However, much of the southern area remains untouched. In these areas, some Siberian cedars have reached 400 to 450 years of age. These trees can have a diameter of up to 1.5 meters.

Biodiversity is a major feature of the Altai Nature Reserve. Scientists have recorded over 1,500 species of vascular plants. This includes 22 species that are listed as vulnerable in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. The reserve is also home to more than 70 species of mammals. This includes endangered animals like the Snow Leopard and the Altai argali. There are 19 species of fish, most of which live in Lake Teletskoye. These include pike, perch, and whitefish. In the streams, the grayling is the most common fish.

The bird population is also very large and diverse. There are 331 species of birds found within the reserve. Nearly half of these, or 48%, are passerine birds. Another 48% are waders. There are 30 species of Falconiformes and 29 species of geese. The remaining 66 species make up only 20% of the total bird population. This variety shows how the different habitats support many different types of life.

Because this is a strict nature reserve, most of the land is closed to the general public. It is primarily used for scientific research or environmental education. However, there are six specific ecotourist routes open to visitors. These routes require permits that should be requested 2 to 3 months in advance. One route is the Chichelgansky Zigzag, which offers an overlook of Lake Teletskoye. Another is the Corbou Waterfall route, which involves a 25 km boat ride and hike to a 13-meter waterfall.
