The Altai Republic is a unique federal subject of Russia. It is located in southern Siberia at the center of Asia.

The republic sits at a major junction of different environments. It meets the Siberian taiga, the Kazakh steppes, and the Mongolian semi-deserts. To the north lies Kemerovo Oblast. To the northeast is Khakassia. To the east is the Tuva Republic. To the west is Altai Krai. It also shares international borders with three nations. These are Mongolia to the southeast, China to the south, and Kazakhstan to the southwest.

The geography of the region is defined by the Altai Mountains. This mountain system covers much of the republic. It also stretches into neighboring Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. The terrain features high, rugged ridges and deep river valleys. These shapes are caused by periodic seismic activity, which means frequent earthquakes.

The highest point in the republic is Mount Belukha. It reaches an elevation of 4,506 meters. This makes it the highest peak in all of Siberia.

Water is a vital part of the Altai landscape. More than 20,000 tributaries flow through the mountains. These waterways total more than 43,000 cubic kilometers. The Katun and Biya rivers are the largest rivers. Both start in the mountains and flow north. Eventually, they join to form the Ob River. The Ob is one of the longest rivers in Siberia.

The Katun River is known for its emerald color. It starts at the Gebler glacier on Mount Belukha. This river is very important to the local people. Native Altaians and many Russians find it spiritually significant. In folklore, Mount Belukha is a gateway to the mystical kingdom of Shambhala.

The republic also contains about 7,000 lakes. The largest is Lake Teletskoye. It is a long and wide lake with an area of 715 square kilometers. It reaches a maximum depth of 325 meters. This lake holds more than 90 cubic kilometers of very clear water. Because these lakes are far from civilization, they hold enormous freshwater reserves. The glaciers also provide a massive amount of water. The total ice volume for registered glaciers is 57 cubic kilometers. Of that, 52 cubic kilometers is actually water.

The history of this land involves many different empires. The Xiongnu Empire governed the territory from 209 BC to AD 93. Later, the area was part of the First Turkic Khaganate and the Uyghur Empire. During these eras, the local people became Turkicized in culture and language. Other groups that ruled the region include the Mongol Empire and the Golden Horde. The Qing Empire also held power here until 1864. In 1864 and 1865, the Altan Nuur Uriankhai became part of the Russian Empire via the Treaty of Tarbagatai.

Political changes continued through the 20th century. In 1918, the Confederated Republic of Altai was briefly established. It aimed to rebuild the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan. However, it remained neutral during the Russian Civil War. It was annexed back into Russia in 1920. A second Altai Republic existed from 1921 to 1922. After that, the region went through several name changes. It was known as the Oyrot Autonomous Oblast and later the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Oblast. In 1992, it finally became the Altai Republic.

Today, the Altai Republic is the least populous republic in Russia. It has 210,924 residents.

The population is quite diverse. Ethnic Russians make up 53.7% of the people. The indigenous Altai people, a Turkic group, make up 37.0%. Kazakhs represent 6.4% of the population. The official languages are Russian and Altai. Kazakh is also official in areas where many Kazakh speakers live. The capital is Gorno-Altaysk, which has 65,342 inhabitants.

The climate is temperate continental. This means the seasons are quite distinct. Summers from June to August are short and mild. Winters from November to March are long and very cold. The southeastern districts, like Kosh-Agachsky, have a harsher climate than the north. Average annual temperatures range from +1 °C to −6.7 °C. The region is also rich in natural resources. People mine for gold, silver, iron, and lithium. Additionally, many people visit the area for its mineral and hot springs.
