The history of this land involves many different cultures over thousands of years. Some theories suggest the upland regions were part of the Indo-European culture cradle. This is known as the Indo-European Urheimat. Hundreds of kurgans, or burial mounds, are visible in these areas. Many groups moved through this territory. The Scythians and Sarmatians brought their religious systems to the central Eurasian steppe. Later, the Alans lived here as a major Muslim group. The Khazar people also had a notable history involving Judaism. Eventually, the Oirat Mongols arrived. These people were the ancestors of the modern Kalmyk population.

The Kalmyk people are of Oirat Mongolian origin. Their ancestors migrated from the steppes of southern Siberia. They lived on the banks of the Irtysh River. They moved toward the Lower Volga region of Eastern Europe by the early 17th century. Historians believe they sought abundant pastures for their animal herds. They may also have been escaping the Dzungar Mongol tribe. They reached the Volga region around 1630. At that time, the land belonged to the Nogai Horde. The Kalmyks eventually expelled the Nogais from the area. The Kalmyks then established the Kalmyk Khanate.

Life in the republic changed significantly during the Soviet period. In 1920, the Kalmyk Autonomous Oblast was formed. It became a republic in 1935. However, the people faced very difficult challenges. A major famine occurred in 1921. Between 71,000 and 72,000 Kalmyks died during this famine. In 1927, the Soviet government deported 20,000 Kalmyks to Siberia and Karelia. During World War II, the German army captured the capital, Elista, in 1942. This period caused great displacement. Some Kalmyks joined anti-Soviet militias. Others fought in the regular Soviet Red Army. Approximately 8,000 Kalmyks received military honors for their service.

Following the war, many Kalmyk people became refugees. Some fled to countries like Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Prague, or France. In Belgrade, Yugoslavia, they built a Buddhist temple in 1929. Today, Kalmykia is a stable republic with a population of about 275,000 residents. The capital city is Elista.

The majority of the people are Vajrayana Tibetan Buddhists. They follow the Gelug and Kagyu lineages. The republic is also known for its natural resources. These include coal, oil, and natural gas. The environment supports unique wildlife. The saiga antelope lives in the region. Its habitat is protected within the Chyornye Zemli Nature Reserve.
