The North Caucasus, also known as Ciscaucasia, is a subregion located in Eastern Europe. It forms the northern portion of the larger Caucasus region. This massive geographic feature serves as a boundary between the continents of Europe and Asia.

The North Caucasus is situated within the borders of Russia. It represents the southernmost part of the country. Because the climate is milder than much of Russia, people often call it Russia's "sunbelt."

The geography of the region is defined by its many water and land borders. To the west, the area is bounded by the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. To the east, the Caspian Sea marks the edge of the territory. To the south, the massive Caucasus Mountains rise up. One of the most famous features is Mount Elbrus. It is located in the southern part of the region. Mount Elbrus is the tallest peak in Europe.

Administratively, the region is divided into several different republics and krais. It is managed as part of the North Caucasian and Southern Federal Districts. The krais include Krasnodar Krai and Stavropol Krai. The region also contains several constituent republics. From west to east, these are Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia–Alania, Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan. Kalmykia is located to the north.

Ancient groups like the Klin-Yar community and the Koban culture lived here. Much of the northern area was covered by the Pontic–Caspian steppe. This area features fertile calcareous chernozyom soils. These soils are used heavily for grazing and tilling. The Manych River often marks the northern boundary of this steppe area.

The political history of the region changed significantly in the 19th century. The Russian Empire gained control following the Caucasian War. By 1864, the conquest of the North Caucasus was complete. This period caused massive displacement of the local people. Between the 1850s and World War I, about one million North Caucasian Muslims became refugees. These groups included Circassians, Chechens, Ingush, and Ossetians. They fled to the Ottoman Empire. This created a large diaspora in countries like Turkey, Syria, and Jordan.

In 1917, the region attempted to become independent. It formed the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus during the Russian Revolution. This republic faced clashes with the Volunteer Army led by General Anton Denikin. Eventually, the Red Army arrived in the region. The Soviet Union formally annexed the area in January 1921. The territory went through many administrative changes under Soviet rule. It was organized into various Okrugs, Oblasts, and the Mountainous ASSR.

The North Caucasus is known for its extreme ethnic and linguistic diversity. Many different ethnic groups live together in this small area. This diversity has often been a cause of historical conflict. Most of the population follows Sunni Islam. However, there are different traditions across the region. In the west, some groups have traditions of paganism connected to Islam. In the east, Sufism is the dominant form of Islam. Conflicts sometimes occur between different Islamic ethnic groups over religious leadership.

Life in the region has unique health and economic characteristics. The North Caucasus has the highest life expectancy in Russia. This is especially true in the mountainous territories. The region is also known for having many centenarians.

However, the economy faces significant challenges. It is often described as having low levels of development. Many areas struggle with corruption and lagging economies. Tourism is a major goal for the Russian government. Currently, tourism only makes up about two percent of the regional economy. This is due to issues with infrastructure and recent instability.
