History tells us that this land has many old stories. The area was the center of the Yenisei Kirghiz state starting in the 6th century AD. Later, in the 13th century, many Kyrgyz people moved away after a defeat by the Mongols. The modern Khakas people believe they come from those who stayed. Russia later took control of the area under Peter the Great. Many forts were built there starting in 1707 and 1718. In 1930, it became an autonomous oblast under Soviet rule. Finally, it became the Republic of Khakassia in February 1992.

Today, about 537,000 people live in this republic. Most of these people live in urban areas or cities. The capital city is Abakan.
