It is part of the North Caucasus region. You can find it near the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The land is also known as Kuban. This name comes from the Kuban River that flows through it. The river divides the land into two different parts. The north has flat plains called the Don Steppe. The south has high mountains and a warm climate. This warm weather makes it a very popular place for tourists.

The geography of the land changes a lot from north to south. In the north, the land is a flat steppe zone. In the south, the mountains are very high. Mount Tsakhvoa is the highest peak at 3,186 meters. Mount Fisht is another famous peak with a glacier. These mountains protect the coast from cold winds from the north. Because of this, the coast has a Mediterranean climate. This means it stays warm and nice for visitors. Small mountain rivers flow down to the sea. These rivers often create beautiful waterfalls along the way.

The history of this land is very long and interesting. Very long ago, people called the Maiōtai lived here. Later, Greek settlers built cities like Phanagoria.

Phanagoria was even a capital for a group called Old Great Bulgaria. Many different groups have ruled this land over the years. These include the Khazars, the Golden Horde, and the Ottoman Empire. In 1783, the Russian Empire took control of the area. Later, Cossack groups moved there to live. The main city was once called Yekaterinodar before it became Krasnodar.

Many people live in Krasnodar Krai today. In the 2021 Census, the population was 5,838,273 people. This makes it the third most crowded region in Russia. The city of Krasnodar is the main center for the area. There are many big ports like Novorossiysk on the Black Sea. Sochi is another famous city that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. The region also has many airports and train lines. These help people travel to the beautiful seaside resorts. Large companies also work here to make things like wheat and oil.

Krasnodar Krai connects many different parts of the world. It shares borders with Georgia and Abkhazia to the south. To the west, the Kerch Strait separates it from Crimea. You can travel through the region by many different ways. There are many trains that run from Moscow to the coast. The Apsheronsk railway is a special narrow-gauge mountain train. It is the longest one of its kind in Russia. Whether by plane, train, or ship, many people visit to see the mountains and the sea.
