Winters can be cold and damp with snow. Temperatures can drop below -10°C because no mountains protect the area from cold waves. Rain and snow fall fairly evenly throughout the year. Extreme storms are quite rare in this part of the country.

Krasnodar has a long and changing history. It began in 1793 as a military camp and fortress. The Black Sea Cossacks built it to defend the borders.

At first, it was named Yekaterinodar, meaning "Catherine's Gift." This name honored Catherine the Great and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. In 1920, the name changed to Krasnodar. This new name can mean "Gift of the Reds" or "Beautiful Gift." The city grew into a busy trade center by 1888.

The city faced many hard times during the 20th century. It suffered heavy damage during World War II when German forces occupied it.
