Long ago, Hat Yai was just a small village. It was once called Khok Samet Chun. This name means "shore eugenia knoll." The town began to grow when the southern railway was built there. In 1922, the railway junction moved to this area. This happened because the old area used to flood too often. At that time, the village had only four residents! A man named Khun Niphat Chinnakorn helped the town grow with his investments. Hat Yai became a community in 1928. It eventually grew into a full city in 1995.

There is so much to see and do in the city. People love to visit the many markets to shop.

You might even smell roasted chestnuts being sold on the street. There are also large weekend markets called Asian Trade and Greenway. These markets are great for finding second-hand clothes and souvenirs. The city is also a great place for learning. It is home to Prince of Songkla University.

The weather in Hat Yai is hot and humid. It has a tropical monsoon climate. This means there are only two seasons. The wet season lasts from April to December. The sunny dry season is very short from January to March. Because of the heavy rain, the city sometimes has floods. Hat Yai also has a very special culture. It is home to the Hat Yai Nai Temple. This temple has a huge reclining Buddha statue. It is actually the third largest in the world! People travel from all over Thailand to see it.
