A massive hydroelectric dam sits upstream on the river. This dam works to control the water levels for everyone. Because of the dam, the river does not freeze during the winter. It also stops the water from flooding the city in the summer. Large islands like Tatyshev and Otdyha sit in the river.

A group led by Andrey Dubenskiy built it to protect the frontier. The name comes from a local word meaning "red steep-riverbank." The settlement grew much faster after a new road arrived between 1735 and 1741. In 1895, the arrival of a railroad helped the city grow even more.
