On August 19, 1628, Andrey Dubenskiy led a group to the confluence of the Kacha and Yenisei Rivers. They built a fort to protect the frontier from native peoples. The name Krasnoyarsk likely comes from the Yarin word Kyzyl Char. This term translates to "red steep-riverbank." The settlement officially gained town status in 1690.
