Novosibirsk has a long and changing history. It was first named Novonikolayevsk to honor Emperor Nicholas II. The city faced hard times during the Russian Civil War. Many people died from diseases like typhus and cholera. The Ob River Bridge was even destroyed during that time. In 1926, the city finally received its current name. This name means "New Siberian" in the Russian language.

Many big things happened as the city grew larger. During the 1930s, it became a giant center for industry. In the 1940s, many factories moved here to stay safe during World War II.

This bridge was completed in the spring of 1897. The new settlement replaced the village of Bolshoye Krivoshchyokovo. The bridge turned the area into a vital regional transport hub. Later, the Turkestan–Siberia Railway connected the city to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea. This connection helped the settlement grow into a massive commercial and industrial center.

Novosibirsk has experienced many name changes and political shifts. It was originally named Novonikolayevsk to honor Emperor Nicholas II and Saint Nicholas.

The city suffered greatly during the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1923. During this period, epidemics of typhus and cholera killed thousands. The Ob River Bridge was also destroyed during the conflict. The city began to rebuild in 1921 under the New Economic Policy. On September 12, 1926, it officially became Novosibirsk. This name translates to "New Siberian" in the Russian language.

Industrialization transformed the city's scale during the 20th century. Under Joseph Stalin, Novosibirsk became a major industrial powerhouse in Siberia. The 'Sibkombain' plant was built to produce heavy mining equipment. Other facilities included metal-processing and food-processing plants. During World War II, the city's role expanded significantly. Between 1941 and 1942, the Soviets moved over 50 large factories from western Russia to the city. This was done to protect them from destruction. These factories helped Novosibirsk become a major supply base for the Red Army.

In the 1950s, the city's infrastructure underwent a massive change. Engineers built a hydroelectric power station with a 400-megawatt capacity.

This project created a giant water reservoir known as the Ob Sea. However, the construction had environmental consequences. It flooded large areas of fertile land and pine woods. The new open water also caused average wind speeds to double. This change increased the rate of soil erosion in the region.

Novosibirsk is also a global center for scientific research. In 1957, the Soviet government established Akademgorodok south of the city center.

One of these is Novosibirsk State University, which is a top school for natural sciences and mathematics. Even though it is a separate infrastructure, Akademgorodok is administered by Novosibirsk.

Modern Novosibirsk is a diverse and busy metropolis. The city is divided into 10 distinct districts, such as Leninsky and Tsentralny. The population includes people from over eighty different ethnicities. The largest ethnic groups are Russians, followed by Tajiks, Tatars, Uzbeks, Ukrainians, and Kyrgyz. The city is well-connected by the Novosibirsk Metro, which opened in 1985.
