Novosibirsk is a huge city in Russia.
It sits in southwestern Siberia on the banks of the Ob River. This city is the largest in North Asia. It is also the third-most populous city in all of Russia. Only Moscow and Saint Petersburg have more people. As of the 2021 census, over 1.6 million people lived there.
It serves as a main center for the Siberian Federal District.
The city grew because of a very important bridge. In 1893, people began building a rail bridge across the Ob River. This bridge was part of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
The bridge was finished in the spring of 1897. This made the area a major place for transport and trade. Later, the Turkestan–Siberia Railway connected the area to Central Asia.
This helped the city grow into a busy hub for many things.
Novosibirsk has a long and changing history. It was first named Novonikolayevsk to honor Emperor Nicholas II.
The city faced hard times during the Russian Civil War. Many people died from diseases like typhus and cholera. The Ob River Bridge was even destroyed during that time. In 1926, the city finally received its current name. This name means "New Siberian" in the Russian language.
Many big things happened as the city grew larger. During the 1930s, it became a giant center for industry. In the 1940s, many factories moved here to stay safe during World War II.
In the 1950s, a large power station was built. This created a huge water reservoir called the Ob Sea. By 1962, the city reached one million people. At that time, it was the youngest city in the world to reach that size.
Today, Novosibirsk is a place for science and travel.
A special research area called Akademgorodok sits south of the city. It is home to many universities and research institutes. The city also has many famous sights to visit. You can see the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral or the Novosibirsk Zoo.

Novosibirsk is a massive urban center located in southwestern Siberia.
It serves as the administrative heart of both the Novosibirsk Oblast and the Siberian Federal District in Russia. As of the 2021 census, the city reached a population of 1,633,595 people. This makes it the third-most populous city in Russia, following Moscow and Saint Petersburg. It is also the largest city in North Asia. Notably, it is the most populous Russian city that does not hold the status of a federal subject.
The city sits on the banks of the Ob River. Its development was driven by the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. In 1893, workers began building a rail bridge across the Ob River.
This bridge was completed in the spring of 1897. The new settlement replaced the village of Bolshoye Krivoshchyokovo. The bridge turned the area into a vital regional transport hub. Later, the Turkestan–Siberia Railway connected the city to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea. This connection helped the settlement grow into a massive commercial and industrial center.
Novosibirsk has experienced many name changes and political shifts. It was originally named Novonikolayevsk to honor Emperor Nicholas II and Saint Nicholas.
The city suffered greatly during the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1923. During this period, epidemics of typhus and cholera killed thousands. The Ob River Bridge was also destroyed during the conflict. The city began to rebuild in 1921 under the New Economic Policy. On September 12, 1926, it officially became Novosibirsk. This name translates to "New Siberian" in the Russian language.
Industrialization transformed the city's scale during the 20th century. Under Joseph Stalin, Novosibirsk became a major industrial powerhouse in Siberia. The 'Sibkombain' plant was built to produce heavy mining equipment. Other facilities included metal-processing and food-processing plants. During World War II, the city's role expanded significantly. Between 1941 and 1942, the Soviets moved over 50 large factories from western Russia to the city. This was done to protect them from destruction. These factories helped Novosibirsk become a major supply base for the Red Army.
In the 1950s, the city's infrastructure underwent a massive change. Engineers built a hydroelectric power station with a 400-megawatt capacity.
This project created a giant water reservoir known as the Ob Sea. However, the construction had environmental consequences. It flooded large areas of fertile land and pine woods. The new open water also caused average wind speeds to double. This change increased the rate of soil erosion in the region.
Novosibirsk is also a global center for scientific research. In 1957, the Soviet government established Akademgorodok south of the city center.
This is a multi-facility scientific research complex. It houses the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The area contains more than 35 research institutes and universities. One of these is Novosibirsk State University, which is a top school for natural sciences and mathematics. Even though it is a separate infrastructure, Akademgorodok is administered by Novosibirsk.
Modern Novosibirsk is a diverse and busy metropolis. The city is divided into 10 distinct districts, such as Leninsky and Tsentralny. The population includes people from over eighty different ethnicities. The largest ethnic groups are Russians, followed by Tajiks, Tatars, Uzbeks, Ukrainians, and Kyrgyz. The city is well-connected by the Novosibirsk Metro, which opened in 1985.
For air travel, Tolmachevo Airport serves as the busiest airport in Siberia.
The city's landscape features many landmarks, including the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Novosibirsk Zoo.
