Novosibirsk Oblast is a large region in southwestern Siberia, Russia. It sits on the southern part of the West Siberian Plain. The land is located near the foothills of the low Salair ridge. Two major rivers, the Ob and the Irtysh, flow through this area. The region shares borders with several other places. To the west is Omsk Oblast, and to the north is Tomsk Oblast. It also borders Kemerovo Oblast to the east and Altai Krai to the south. In the southwest, it sits next to Kazakhstan.

History shows that many different people have lived here. During the Middle Ages, Siberian Tatar tribes lived in the region. Later, the area became a place for Russian settlers. The first Russian village, Maslyanino, was started in 1644. In 1716, an officer named Ivan Butkeyev built the Berd fortress. This fortress grew into the city of Berdsk. A big change came with the building of the Trans-Siberian railway. The city of Novosibirsk was founded in 1893. It quickly became a very important transport hub.

Historically, the region has seen many different groups of people. During the Middle Ages, Siberian Tatar tribes like the Baraba and Chat lived here. The area later became a destination for Russian colonists. The first Russian village, Maslyanino, was founded in 1644. In 1716, an officer named Ivan Butkeyev built the Berd fortress. This fortress eventually grew into the city of Berdsk. A major turning point occurred with the construction of the Trans-Siberian and Turkestan–Siberian railways. Novosibirsk was founded in 1893 as Novonikolayevsk. It quickly became a vital transport hub and surpassed other major Siberian cities.

The region is rich in various natural resources. As of 2007, oil reserves reached 204 million tons. There are also significant gas reserves, including 600 million cubic meters of free gas. Many of these resources are found in the Severny and Kyshtovsky districts. The land also contains several metals. These include 2.9 million tons of titanium dioxide and 2.068 million tons of bauxite. There are twenty-three fields of alluvial placer gold. Additionally, the region holds 5.527 million tons of high-quality anthracite coal.

Forestry is another vital part of the local environment. Forests cover 4,531,800 hectares of the region. Most of these forests consist of softwood. Softwood forests cover 3,481,300 hectares, while coniferous forests cover 1,011,900 hectares. The coniferous forests are mostly located near the Ob River and the Salair Ridge. These forests hold timber reserves of 121.39 million cubic meters. However, accessing these forests can be difficult. Most of the timber is located in the northern parts of the region.

The economy of Novosibirsk Oblast is driven by diverse industrial activities. Industry accounts for over 80% of the total products and services shipped. Manufacturing made up 67.4% of the industrial output in 2007. One major sector is food, beverages, and tobacco, which accounted for 20.7% of output. The region produces large amounts of milk, bread, and meat. It is also known for Karachinskaya mineral water. Between 1999 and 2008, industrial output grew by 170%. This growth rate exceeded the Russian national average by 23%.

This city is the third-largest in Russia. The population is 94.2% Russian, with smaller groups of Tatars, Germans, and others. The region is one of the more non-religious areas in Russia. The Legislative Assembly of Novosibirsk Oblast consists of 76 deputies. The highest official is the Governor, who acts as the guarantor of the regional Charter.
