Building the city happened in many small steps over many years. In 1652, a man named Ivan Pokhabov built winter quarters there. These were used for trading gold and collecting fur taxes. Later, in 1661, Yakov Pokhabov built a small fort called an ostrog.

As the area grew, the fort was rebuilt twice to make it bigger. By 1686, the settlement officially became a town. It grew from a small defensive outpost into a busy place for trade. This helped Irkutsk become a key part of Eastern Siberia.

History brought many different people to this Siberian city. In the early 1800s, many Russian nobles and artists were sent there in exile. They were part of a group called the Decembrists. These people helped make the city a center for art and learning. They built beautiful wooden houses with fancy hand-carved decorations.

The settlement gained official town rights in 1686. Early Irkutsk was divided into a "small town" and a "big city." The small town was a wooden fortress near the river. The big city, or posad, was where commercial life happened. It was inhabited by people from northern Russia who brought their own customs.

In the early 19th century, the city's culture changed significantly. Many Russian nobles and artists were sent to Irkutsk in exile. They were part of the Decembrist revolt of 1825. By the end of the 19th century, one out of every two men in the city was an exile. These intellectuals helped turn Irkutsk into a center for social and cultural life.
