It serves as the center for the Irkutsk Oblast region in Russia. The city sits on the banks of the wide Angara River. This river flows from the famous Lake Baikal.

You can also find the smaller Irkut River nearby. The city is surrounded by rolling hills and thick forests called taiga. It is a very important place for travel in the region. The Trans-Siberian Railway and highway connect it to other lands.

Building the city happened in many small steps over many years. In 1652, a man named Ivan Pokhabov built winter quarters there. These were used for trading gold and collecting fur taxes. Later, in 1661, Yakov Pokhabov built a small fort called an ostrog.

As the area grew, the fort was rebuilt twice to make it bigger. By 1686, the settlement officially became a town. It grew from a small defensive outpost into a busy place for trade. This helped Irkutsk become a key part of Eastern Siberia.

History brought many different people to this Siberian city. In the early 1800s, many Russian nobles and artists were sent there in exile. They were part of a group called the Decembrists. These people helped make the city a center for art and learning. They built beautiful wooden houses with fancy hand-carved decorations.

Many of these historic wooden homes still stand today. Because of this rich culture, people once called it the "Paris of Siberia." It was also known as the "Siberian Athens."

Irkutsk has seen many changes and big events through the years. A massive fire in 1789 destroyed much of the city, including 4,000 houses.

During the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1920, the city saw very fierce fighting. In the 1950s, a huge reservoir was built on the Angara River. This project helped create hydroelectric power for the region. Today, the city is also a major center for making aircraft.

Today, Irkutsk is a place where old and new things meet. You can see very old stone buildings like the Epiphany Cathedral.

This cathedral was built between 1718 and 1746. The city's layout still shows its early history. The streets in the old center follow the curves of the riverbank. Some parts of the historic center are even on a special list for World Heritage Sites. It remains a vital hub for people living in the vast Siberian landscape.
