Two rivers flow through the city. These are the Selenga and the Uda rivers. The Uda river divides the city as it flows into the Selenga. The Selenga is very important for the region. It provides 50% of all the water that flows into the Lake Baikal basin. This river is home to many valuable fish species like the Omul and the Siberian sturgeon.

The history of the area began with the Evenks and the Buryat Mongols. In 1666, Russian Cossacks built a small fort called Udinskoye. Because of its good location, the settlement grew into a major trade center. It helped connect Russia with China and Mongolia. The city was later known as Udinsk and then Verkhneudinsk. A huge fire in 1878 destroyed much of the town, but it was rebuilt. In 1900, the Trans-Siberian Railway reached the city. This caused the population to grow very quickly. By 1939, the number of people living there had reached 126,000.

Many different people live in Ulan-Ude today. According to the 2021 Census, there were 437,565 people living in the city. This makes it the third-largest city in eastern Siberia. Most of the people are Russians, making up 61.4% of the population. Buryats make up 35.1% of the people living there. The city is also an important center for Tibetan Buddhism in Russia. You can find the Ivolginsky datsan near the city.

The city uses many types of transport, including trams, buses, and marshrutka share taxis.

There are many interesting things to see in the city. You can visit the Ethnographic Museum of the peoples of Transbaikal. This is one of the largest open-air museums in Russia. It shows how people lived from ancient times until the mid-20th century. In the central square, there is a very unusual sight. It is a giant statue of the head of Vladimir Lenin. The statue was built in 1971 and weighs 42 tons. It is actually the largest head statue in the entire world. You can also see the Odigitrievsky Cathedral, which was the first stone building in the city.

The weather in Ulan-Ude can be quite extreme. The city has a humid steppe climate. This means the winters are very long, dry, and cold. There is often a lot of snow on the ground. It is so cold that temperatures never rise above freezing between December 31 and February 1. However, the summers are relatively long. They last from mid-May until early September. During these months, the weather is warm. Most of the rain for the year falls during these summer months.
