The city sits right on the coast of Avacha Bay. This bay is part of the huge Pacific Ocean. Near the city, you can find Khalaktyrskoye Lake. The city is surrounded by many tall mountains and volcanoes. These hills are so high that you cannot see the horizon from the town. It is a very important place for ships and sea travel.

The city has a long and interesting history. Cossack units first visited this area in 1697. Later, an explorer named Vitus Bering helped found the city in 1740. He named the settlement after his two ships. Those ships were named Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The city officially gained town status on April 9, 1812. In 1924, the name was officially changed to include "Kamchatsky." This helps people know it is on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Life in the city is shaped by the sea and the weather. The climate is subarctic, which means it is often very cold. Most of the snow falls between November and April. In January, the daytime high temperature is usually around 26 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmest month is August, with highs near 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes, the city faces very big weather events. In January 2026, a massive snowstorm buried roads and buildings.

Nature can also be quite powerful in this region. The area has experienced large earthquakes in recent years. In March 2020, a 7.5 earthquake shook the area. People felt it 285 miles away from the center. In July 2025, an even larger 8.8 earthquake happened nearby. This caused damage along the coastline and to some piers. The city is also a great place for fishing. It provides much salmon and crab meat for the country.
