earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Avachinsky is a very active volcano in Russia. It sits on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East. You can see it from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This volcano is a stratovolcano. That means it has a layered shape. It is part of a group called Decade Volcanoes. These are special volcanoes that people study closely. Scientists watch them because they are near many people.

This volcano works because of the Earth's moving plates. It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Pacific Plate slides under the Eurasian Plate. This happens at a rate of about 8 centimeters every year. A wedge of material sits between these two plates. This material is the source of the volcano's activity. It creates the heat and movement needed for eruptions.

Long ago, the volcano changed its shape. A huge landslide happened 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. This landslide created a horseshoe-shaped caldera. A caldera is a large crater formed by a collapse. After that, a new cone grew inside the hole. This happened during two big eruption phases. One phase was 18,000 years ago. The other was 7,000 years ago.

We have many records of this volcano's history. John Ledyard wrote about an eruption in 1779. He kept notes in his journal from Captain Cook's voyage. He called Avachinsky "Peter." The volcano has erupted at least 16 times in recorded history. One very large eruption happened in 1945. That eruption had a VEI of 4. It sent out a huge amount of magma.

Today, the volcano is still very busy. It has small eruptions like in 1991 and 2001. You can find many fumaroles near the top. Fumaroles are openings that let out hot gases. These gases can be over 200 degrees Celsius. The ground also has frequent earthquakes. These events show the volcano is still active. It is a powerful part of the natural world.
