It is the highest mountain on New Britain. It is also the second highest in the Bismarck Archipelago. This volcano is a stratovolcano. That means it is built of layers. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the country. Because it is near many people, it is very important to watch.

This volcano works because of moving plates. The Solomon Sea Plate slides under the South Bismarck Plate. This happens in the New Britain subduction zone. This movement makes the volcano erupt. When it erupts, it can be very powerful. It can produce a sub-Plinian eruption. This is a type of large eruption. It can send ash high into the sky. It can also create pyroclastic flows. These are fast flows that move down the sides of the mountain.

People have known about Ulawun for a long time. William Dampier recorded the first eruption in the year 1700. Since then, there have been 22 recorded eruptions. Experts call Ulawun one of the Decade Volcanoes. This is a special group of 16 volcanoes. These volcanoes are studied because they have large eruptions. They are also very close to where people live. Scientists want to understand them better to keep people safe.

Ulawun has had much activity lately. On June 26, 2019, it erupted at 7 am. The ash climbed very high. Over 5,000 people had to leave their homes. Flights to Hoskins Airport were even cancelled. In November 2023, the volcano was very active again. The alert level rose to stage 4. This is the highest level on the scale. The ash plume reached a high altitude. It drifted toward the west.

This volcano also changes the air around it. Volcanoes in Papua New Guinea release a gas called sulphur dioxide. Ulawun releases about 7 kg/s of this gas. This is about 2% of all the sulphur dioxide in the world. This gas goes into the atmosphere. The volcano can also change the land. During the 2019 eruption, lava cut the New Britain Highway. It broke the road in three different locations. This shows how much power the volcano has.
