These islands sit in the western Pacific Ocean. They are located near the northeastern coast of New Guinea. This area is part of the Islands Region of Papua New Guinea. The islands surround the Bismarck Sea. They sit upon three different plates called the North Bismarck, Manus, and South Bismarck Plates.

Most of these islands are volcanic in nature.

This means they were formed by volcanic activity. The land area of the archipelago is about 28,000 square kilometers. One island, Ritter Island, has a very dramatic history. On March 13, 1888, a volcano erupted there. The eruption was so strong that almost the whole volcano fell into the ocean. This event caused a megatsunami, which is a huge wave.

People have lived on these islands for a very long time. The first inhabitants arrived around 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. They might have traveled from New Guinea by boat. Some may have used a land bridge created by the Earth's crust. Later, the Lapita people arrived at the islands. These people are the direct ancestors of the Austronesian peoples. This includes people from Polynesia, eastern Micronesia, and Island Melanesia.

European explorers first visited the islands in 1616. Jacob le Maire was the first European to see them. Later, the islands became part of a German protectorate in 1884. The name of the islands honors Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. In 1914, the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force took control. The islands stayed under Australian rule for many years. This was interrupted by a Japanese occupation during World War II.

New Britain is found in both New Britain and West New Britain provinces. There is also a water path called St. George's Channel. This channel sits between New Britain and New Ireland. Papua New Guinea became independent in September 1975.
