The country is surrounded by many neighbors. Bougainville is to the west, while New Caledonia and Vanuatu are to the southeast. Fiji and Tuvalu are to the east. To the north, you will find the Federated States of Micronesia and Nauru.

People have called these islands home for a very long time. The first settlers arrived between 30,000 and 28,800 BC.

During that time, sea levels were much lower. Buka and Bougainville were actually joined to the southern islands. As the Ice Age ended, the sea rose and split the land into many islands. Later, the Lapita people arrived around 1200 to 800 BC. They brought special ceramics, or pottery, with them.

These different groups of people mixed together over many years. This mixing helped create the modern indigenous population we see today.

European explorers first arrived many centuries ago. In 1568, a Spanish navigator named Álvaro de Mendaña visited the islands.

He was the first European to see them. People later called the area "the Solomons." They believed the islands might be connected to stories of the wealthy King Solomon from the Bible. Other explorers like Pedro Fernandes de Queirós visited in 1606. Later, many different ships arrived from Britain, the United States, and Australia. Some came to hunt whales, while others came to trade for things like sandalwood and sea cucumbers.

History changed greatly during the 1800s and 1900s. In 1893, the southern islands became a British protectorate. This meant Britain helped manage and protect the area. During World War II, from 1942 to 1945, the islands saw fierce fighting. The United States, British forces, and the Empire of Japan all fought there. This included the famous Battle of Guadalcanal. After the war, the country began to change its own rules. It gained self-government in 1976. Finally, the Solomon Islands became an independent nation in 1978.

Because the King lives far away, a governor-general represents him in the country. The governor-general is chosen on the advice of the prime minister. The people live in many different ways, from small villages to busy cities. Many people still practice subsistence agriculture, which means they grow food to feed their own families.
