There are also more than 500 small islets. About 110 of these islands are permanently inhabited. Most people live on two large islands named Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

About 87% of the people live on these two main islands. Many live on the coasts of Viti Levu. This includes the capital city of Suva. Other busy towns are Nadi and Lautoka.

Most of the islands were made by volcanic activity. This started about 150 million years ago. Some islands still show heat from deep underground today. These are called geothermal systems. On the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni, this heat is visible. On Viti Levu, the heat comes from a different source. These surface discharges have low temperatures.

The land can be difficult to travel across. Because of the terrain, the middle of Viti Levu has very few people living there.

Humans have lived in Fiji for a very long time. People arrived during the second millennium BC. The first settlers were Austronesians. Later, Melanesians arrived in the islands. There was also some influence from Polynesian cultures.

Some people may have even moved on to Samoa or Hawai'i. Long ago, Fijians built large boats called drua. They also built special homes called bure and vale.

They even used polished sperm whale teeth as money. These teeth were called tambua.

Europeans first visited the islands in the 17th century. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman saw Vanua Levu in 1643. Later, the British established a colony in 1874. Fiji was an independent kingdom for a short time before that.
