It acts as a main hub for the whole island group. Most people in Fiji live here. About 600,000 people call this island their home. This includes nearly three quarters of the nation's population. The capital city, Suva, is located on this island. Other important towns like Nadi, Lautoka, and Sigatoka sit along the coast.

The land on Viti Levu is quite rugged. This is because of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A large mountain range runs from north to south. This range splits the island into two roughly equal halves. The center of the island is filled with forests. The highest point is Mount Tomanivi, also known as Mount Victoria. It rises to a height of 4,341 feet.

The weather changes depending on which side of the mountains you are on. The eastern side gets heavy rainfall. This area is home to tropical moist forests. The western side is much drier. Some people call it the "burning west." This side has tropical dry forests instead. Because it is dry, farmers grow lots of sugar cane there. In the east, people are developing a dairy industry. One large cattle ranch in Yaqara holds 7,000 head of cattle.

The island has a very interesting history and many different types of rocks. The oldest rocks belong to the Wainimala group. These can be found south of Nadi on peaks like Koromba. Other rocks, called the Mba group, are in the north. This group includes the Emperor Mine near Vatukoula. You might even see a very special creature here. The Giant Fijian long-horned beetle lives only on this island. It is one of the largest insects in the world.

Traveling around and to the island is easy. A single major road goes all the way around the edge of the island. You can fly into Nadi International Airport in the northwest. There is also Nausori International Airport in the southeast. To reach other islands, people use ferry services. These boats connect Viti Levu to the rest of Fiji. The island faces some changes due to climate change. Rising sea levels might affect the northern and western parts of the land.
