Viti Levu is the largest island in the Republic of Fiji.

It serves as the central hub for the entire Fijian archipelago. The island is home to approximately 70% of the nation's population. This represents about 600,000 people. The capital city, Suva, is located here. Other significant urban centers include Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Nausori, Rakiraki, and Sigatoka. Most of these towns are spread along the coastline. A single major road runs around the entire perimeter of the island.

The physical landscape of Viti Levu is quite rugged. This terrain resulted from historical earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A central mountain range runs from north to south. This range divides the island into two roughly equal halves. The center of the island is covered in dense forest. The highest point is Mount Tomanivi, also called Mount Victoria. It reaches an elevation of 4,341 feet.

Weather patterns on the island depend on the mountain range. The eastern side receives heavy rainfall. This moisture supports tropical moist forests. The western side sits in a rain shadow. This area is noticeably drier and is colloquially called the "burning west." It contains tropical dry forests instead. These different climates shape the local economy. Sugar cane production thrives in the drier west. Meanwhile, a dairy industry is being developed in the east. The largest cattle ranch is in Yaqara. It holds 7,000 head of cattle on its land.

The geology of Viti Levu is very complex. The island sits in a tectonic zone between the Australian and Pacific plates. It lies on the Fiji Platform. This platform is bordered by active extension fault lines. These include the Fiji Fracture Zone to the north. The 176° Extension Zone lies to the west. The Hunter fracture zone and Lau Ridge are to the east. These faults are centers for many shallow earthquakes in the region.

Different rock groups define the island's history. The oldest rocks belong to the Wainimala group from the Eocene and Early Miocene epochs. This group includes volcanic flows like basalt, trachyte, and rhyolite. These rocks are found south of Nadi. They include the peaks of Koromba and Natambumgguto. The Tholo Plutonics also intruded this group. These consist of stocks made of tonalite, granodiorite, gabbro, and diorite. The Suva group includes sandstones and marl found in river valleys. These valleys include the Nadi and Navua Rivers.

The northern part of the island contains the Plio-Pleistocene Mba group. This group consists of porphyritic basalt flows and volcaniclastics. It also includes greywacke. Notable peaks in this area include Mount Tomanivi and Koroyanitu. This group extends along the eastern coast toward Nausori. It also includes the Emperor Mine near Vatukoula. The island is also the only home of the Giant Fijian long-horned beetle. This is one of the largest insects in the world.

Human history and culture vary across the island. Oral traditions say the first Melanesian settlers arrived at Vuda Point. They established Viseisei as the oldest settlement. However, some archaeological evidence contradicts this account. The island's population is also diverse. The western part has a high concentration of Indo-Fijians. Many of their ancestors arrived from India between 1879 and 1916. The eastern part has more indigenous Fijians.

Transportation connects the island to the world. Nadi International Airport is in the northwest. Nausori International Airport serves Suva in the southeast. Ferry services connect Viti Levu to other islands. However, the island faces challenges from climate change. Rising sea levels and storm surges are major concerns. It is estimated that 6.75% of the population could be exposed. This might require temporary relocation from northern and western areas.
