Most people in Fiji live on this island. About 600,000 people call it home. The capital city, Suva, is also here. Many other towns sit along the coast. These include Nadi, Lautoka, and Sigatoka.

A big mountain range runs through the middle. This range goes from north to south. It makes the land look bumpy. The center of the island has many trees. The highest peak is Mount Tomanivi. It rises to 4,341 feet.

The weather is different on each side. The east side gets a lot of rain. It has moist forests. The west side is much drier. People call it the "burning west." Because it is dry, farmers grow sugar cane there.

You might see a very large insect here. It is the Giant Fijian long-horned beetle.

People travel to the island by plane or boat. Nadi International Airport is on the northwest side. Large ships also connect the island to others in Fiji.
