It sits on the north coast of the island of Tongatapu. This island is part of the southernmost island group in the country. The city is located near a deep bay. This deep water makes the area a great place for boats to land.

Because of this harbor, the city became a very important place for Tonga.

History tells us many stories about this place. In 1777, a British captain named James Cook arrived at the bay. He made a map of the area and saw the island of Pangaimotu to the east. Later, an English missionary named George Vason wrote about the area in 1810. He spelled the name "Noogollefa" in his book. Other writers used different spellings like "Nioocalofa" or "Noukou-Alofa" over the years. These changes happened because the Tongan alphabet was still being developed.

The city grew into a major center during the 1800s. This happened as many people came to Nukuʻalofa to follow the Christian faith. In 1875, King George Taufaʻahau Tupou I issued a constitution. This document made Nukuʻalofa the official capital of Tonga. The city was divided into three main areas to help manage it. One area is called Kolomotuʻa, which means "old town." Another area is Kolofoʻou, which means "new town."
