Many of these mountains, like the Southern Alps, formed from volcanic eruptions and moving earth. This varied land makes the country very special to visit.

How did people first find these islands? Polynesians were the first to settle the land. They arrived in several waves between about 1280 and 1350.

Some Māori stories say an explorer named Kupe found the islands while chasing a giant octopus. These early settlers developed a unique Māori culture. Later, European explorers arrived to see the islands. Abel Tasman was the first European to see them in 1642. In 1769, Captain James Cook became the first European to map the coast.

History changed a lot in the 1800s. In 1840, Māori chiefs and the United Kingdom signed the Treaty of Waitangi.

This treaty helped Britain start its own rule in the islands. This led to many years of conflict between the colonial government and Māori tribes. These fights are often called the New Zealand Wars. Over time, many Māori lost their land to the government. New Zealand eventually became an independent country in 1947. It still has a king, Charles III, as its head of state.

Today, about 5.3 million people live in New Zealand.
