The city sits on a narrow strip of land called an isthmus. This means it has a harbour on each side of the city. One harbour faces the Pacific Ocean. The other harbour faces the Tasman Sea.

The land here is very special and bumpy. The landscape is dotted with 53 volcanic centres. These make up the Auckland Volcanic Field.

Many of the hills you see are actually old volcanoes. Some hills are covered in green rainforest. The city is also near several mountain ranges. To the south-east are the Hunua Ranges. To the west are the Waitākere Ranges. This mix of water and volcanic hills makes the area look unique.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Māori people first settled the isthmus around the year 1350. They valued the land because it was very fertile for growing things.

The Māori name for Auckland is Tāmaki. This means "Tāmaki desired by many." Later, in 1840, a British colony was started. William Hobson chose Auckland to be the capital of New Zealand. It stayed the capital until 1865 when the capital moved to Wellington.

Auckland has grown into a huge hub for many different people. It is a very multicultural and cosmopolitan city.
