It is part of the North Island. A thin strip of land called the Auckland isthmus connects it to the rest of the island. This narrow land sits between the Waitematā Harbour and the Manukau Harbour. People also call this area the North Auckland Peninsula. It stretches northwest for about 330 kilometres. The land is quite wide, reaching 85 kilometres at its widest point.

This land has a very interesting beginning. It actually started as an island 22 million years ago.

This happened when the Pacific Plate and Australian Plate moved together. These movements pushed the land upward. Much of the land was moved from other places to its current spot. This type of land is called an allochthon. When the land rose, some parts of the Auckland Region sank deep into the sea. These parts sank 2,000 to 3,000 metres down.

The coastline is very wavy and complex. Many smaller peninsulas branch off the main land.

You can also find Cape Reinga and the North Cape. The northernmost point is the Hikurua or de Surville Cliffs.

There are many large bodies of water nearby. The Kaipara Harbour is on the western side. It is one of the largest harbours in the world. It stretches 65 kilometres from north to south.

This place holds a very special place in history. In February 1840, people signed the Treaty of Waitangi.
