Cape Reinga is a famous tip of land in New Zealand. It sits at the very top of the Aupōuri Peninsula. This peninsula is part of the North Island.

The cape marks where two huge oceans meet. The Tasman Sea is on the west side. The Pacific Ocean is on the east side. You can watch the two seas clash together. This makes the water look very unsettled and rough near the coast.

For the Māori people, this place is deeply sacred. Its Māori name is Te Rerenga Wairua. This means the leaping-off place of spirits. People believe spirits travel here to reach the underworld. They use a path called Te Ara Wairua. The spirits climb the roots of an 800-year-old pōhutukawa tree. They then go to their homeland of Hawaiki. They might even turn at the Three Kings Islands for one last look. There is also a spring called Te Waiora-a-Tāne.

A tall lighthouse stands at the cape to guide travelers. This lighthouse was built in 1941. It replaced an older light on Motuopao Island from 1879. In 1987, the lighthouse became fully automated. This means people no longer live there as keepers. The old 1000 watt light is gone now. It was replaced by a small 50 watt flashing beacon. This tiny light sits inside the huge lantern.

Many people enjoy visiting this special place every year. Over 500,000 visitors come to see it annually. The number of visitors grows by about five percent each year. It is easy to reach by State Highway 1. The last 19 km used to be a gravel road. This was often called a metal road by locals. The road was finally fully sealed in 2010. Workers planted over 150,000 plants to stop the ground from washing away.

Cape Reinga is not the northernmost point of the North Island. The Surville Cliffs are actually 30 km further east. Those cliffs are 3 km further north than the cape. Another headland called Cape Maria van Diemen is also nearby. A Dutch explorer named Abel Tasman found that cape in 1642. He thought it was the northernmost point of a land he called Staten Landt. Today, the cape is a major stop for hikers on the Te Araroa trail.
