Meeting point of Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean

This place is where two big seas meet. The Tasman Sea is on the west. The Pacific Ocean is on the east. The waters clash and look very rough.

This place is very special to Māori people. They call it Te Rerenga Wairua. This name means the leaping-off place of spirits. Māori believe spirits travel here to reach the underworld. They climb the roots of an old pōhutukawa tree. The tree is 800 years old. There is also a spring in the hill. It is called Te Waiora-a-Tāne.

Many people visit the cape every year. Over 500,000 people come to see it.
