It sits on the North Island. A thin strip of land called the Auckland isthmus joins it to the rest of the island. The peninsula is about 330 kilometres long. It goes northwest from Auckland. It is also called the North Auckland Peninsula.

The coast is wavy and complex. It has many small pieces of land branching off. The top part is the Aupōuri Peninsula. This is a peninsula on a peninsula! It is only 10 kilometres wide at its thinnest part. At the very top, you can find Cape Maria van Diemen. You can also find Cape Reinga.

There are many large bodies of water here. The Kaipara Harbour is one of the largest in the world. It is 65 kilometres long. Further north is the Hokianga harbour. This place is very important to the Māori people. On the east coast, you will find the Bay of Islands. This is where people signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The city of Whangārei is the largest town there. It sits near a harbour on the Pacific Ocean.
