Waikato River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Waikato River is the longest river in New Zealand. It runs through the North Island and is a very important part of the land. The river starts on the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu. It joins the Tongariro River system and flows into Lake Taupō. This is the largest lake in the country. From there, the water flows out of the lake at the northeast edge. It creates the famous Huka Falls before moving northwest through the Waikato Plains. Finally, the river empties into the Tasman Sea at Port Waikato.

This river has a very long and changing history. Many thousands of years ago, the river flowed a different way. It used to flow north through the Hinuera Gap and the Hauraki Basin. A huge volcanic eruption happened about 27,000 years ago. This event created Lake Taupō and covered the land in debris. Later, a massive flood caused the river to change its course near Piarere. The river stayed in this new path through the Maungatautari gorge. You can still see the old river edges in the cliffs at Hinuera today.

People have used the Waikato River for many different things. For the Māori people, the river has deep spiritual meaning. The name Waikato comes from the Māori language and means "flowing water." The Tainui tribe regards the river as a source of their mana, or pride. In the past, the river was a vital way to travel. It once took about three days to paddle a waka from Waiuku to Cambridge. Today, people visit the river to go kayaking or rowing.

One of the most important jobs for the river is making electricity. Between Lake Taupō and Karapiro, there are nine hydroelectric power stations. These stations use eight different dams to catch the moving water. Most of the lakes in this part of the river are man-made. These lakes help control the water to create power for the national grid. This system makes about 13% of all the electricity in New Zealand. The Huntly Power Station also uses water from the river to stay cool.

There are many ways to enjoy the river's beauty today. Some people like to go boating or use jet skis in certain areas. The fast water at the Full James rapid is great for whitewater kayaking. Lake Karapiro is a famous place for rowing competitions. Near the coast, the river creates a long, thin delta with many islands. The largest of these is Motutieke Island. You can also see the river as it flows through many different towns.
