It sits on the North Island inside a caldera. A caldera is a large hole left by a volcano. This lake is the largest in New Zealand by surface area. It is also the second largest freshwater lake in Oceania. The town of Taupō sits on a bay on the northeast shore.

The Waikato River flows out of the lake. This is the longest river in New Zealand.

The lake formed through huge volcanic events. About 25,600 years ago, a supervolcanic eruption occurred. This event was called the Oruanui eruption. It ejected 1,170 cubic kilometres of material. This caused the land to collapse and form the caldera. Later, the caldera filled with water to create the lake. Another big eruption happened around 232 CE. This was known as the Hatepe eruption. It was one of the most powerful eruptions in 5,000 years. It ejected 100 cubic kilometres of material. This eruption even made the sky look red over Rome and China.

Many different living things call this place home. The area around the lake has beech and podocarp forests. You can find many types of ferns growing there too. Inside the water, there are native crayfish called kōura. There are also fish called kōkopu. People also introduced brown trout and rainbow trout to the lake. The brown trout came from Scotland in 1887. The rainbow trout arrived from California in 1898. Smelt were also added to provide food for the trout.

Near hot springs, tiny living things called extremophiles live in the heat.

People visit the lake for many exciting reasons. Tourism is a big part of the local economy. Visitors often go skydiving or join the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. Some people even try to swim the whole 40.2 km length. In 2020, a man named Michael Wells breaststroked across it. You can also see tall Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay. These carvings are over 10 metres high. They show a navigator named Ngātoro-i-rangi from Māori legend. People visit the cliffs by boat or kayak to see them.

The lake is very special to the Māori people. The Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe considers the lake a taonga. This means it is a treasure or something very special. The tribe owns the lake bed and its tributaries. They allow the public to use the area for fun. The volcano is still active today. Scientists from GNS Science monitor it closely. The weather stays temperate, but it can be chilly in July. Rain falls in all seasons, but it is heaviest in winter and spring.
